The Orangeburg County Community of Character started a Mentoring Program at the Mellichamp Elementary School in the school year 2010 - 2011. We started with 25 Mentors and everyone stayed to the end of the school year. Several Mentors kept in touch with the students during the summer break. Four mentees moved to outlying towns and transferred to schools in those areas. Each Mentor followed their mentee and finished out the school year with them.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the Community of Character increased the number of mentors to 51. Over 95% of the mentors from the previous school year returned for the 2011-2012 year, and we added 26 new mentors. Ms. Angela Burroughs, then Guidance Counselor, was instrumental in helping us identify students needing mentors.

During the 2012-2013 school year, a second mentoring program was started. Ten willing and dedicated mentors headed to Carver Edisto Middle School to work with students who were identified by Guidance Counselor Taylor Riley. Since its inception, the number of mentors has increased from 10 to 15.

Orangeburg County School District Five has implemented the Bootstraps Mentoring program to facilitate their mentoring needs. We have partnered with Bootstraps in program planning and providing mentor resources. Orangeburg County Community of Character looks forward to providing continued support and expansion of mentoring programs in all school districts to better serve our students.
